It's virtually impossible to work happily at home without the cooperation and support of your spouse, so a joint decision will most certainly work better than issuing an edict or even simply making an announcement that you've decided to work at home. Even if you already have an office at home, it's not too late to sit down and talk about whether it's working out. Be honest about how you feel about using your home as an office and encourage your spouse to be honest too. Discuss your concerns openly. If you're worried that your spouse will never leave the office, say so. If you're concerned that the children will be neglected, say so. The potential problems you identify can help you develop a practical plan to guard against them. Specific Steps You Can Take: * Make the decision to work at home a joint one. * Express your reasons for wanting to work at home. * Discuss your concerns openly and encourage your spouse to do so as well. * Thank your spouse for each concern he or she brings up. * Respond honestly to each other's concerns. * Take each concern seriously and get the facts about it. * Think of possible solutions and develop a plan for how to avoid potential problems. * Test out your solutions. See if they work. Revise them when they don't work to your or your mate's satisfaction. The inevitable changes that take place when you start working from home can strain your relationship. The situation doesn't have to become painful, however. The initial stress can be a sign of new and better things to come. But you must be alert and responsive to difficulties that arise while they are still manageable. Here are some of the healthy reactions a couple can expect. They don't always feel good, but they are a normal part of the process of changing your lifestyle. Conflicts with New Identities: The decision to work at home is almost always part of a larger decision to change your life, which changes your identity. People who begin working at home are at turning points in their lives. Assuming a new identity is a major adjustment in itself. Add working from home and the many accompanying changes in daily routine and you can see why people going through so many adjustments may not be easy to live with. You can understand why they may be unsure of themselves, edgy, worried, or struggling to put up a good front. Even when spouses want to be supportive, and actually think they are helping, they may not welcome all aspects of their mate's new identity. Disputes over Duties and Responsibilities: Working from home usually means changes in household routines. Many arguments and conflicts can arise over day-to-day arrangements about: 1. Cleaning. Living and working at home twenty-four hours a day means more mess and more wear and tear. Who does the extra work to keep the house in order? When does it have to be cleaned up or repaired? Do children now have to be neater because customers are coming to the house? If so, who gets the children to clean up? If the packaging department of your business is on the dining room table, how long can it stay like that, and who puts everything away - the person who made the mess or the person who wants it cleaned up? 2. Meals. Working at home usually means at least one extra meal there. So you need to discuss who plans it, who buys it, who fixes it, who cleans it up. If you have been fixing the meals, for example, will you still have time to fix them all, or to fix the same kinds of meals, now that you're working at home? 3. Space. Working at home can place certain limitations on what your family can do there or even on other things you want to do. If your family room is now your office, where does everyone go to relax? Can they have company while you are working? Can your spouse walk around the house in a bathing suit during business hours? You'll need to consider issues like whether your family can play the stereo or talk on the phone whenever they want, or if such activity infringes on your office space. 4. Children. Children need a lot of attention. They can be a distraction and an interruption that makes work next to impossible. A decision has to be made about who handles this. Does the one working at home take on more of these responsibilities than before? Who keeps the children quiet or out of your office? 5. Time. Once your office is at home, you need to determine who gets to spend time with you and when. If you're away at the office all day, you clearly can't take the kids to the park after school. 7 Things to Know Before You Work From Home by Jeff Casmer
Before you jump into a work at home program you should consider the following. There a lot of pitch pages that will urge you to buy and paint a very pretty picture such as, “make a six figure income working only 30min”. Do not fall prey to over hyped scams. This is not to say that all the programs you come across will be scams but there are a lot of them out there. Yes getting a great deal on a great product is well, great but you won’t know if it a great if unless you do your research. What are other people saying about this program or product? Is there someone you can contact for more information, is there more than one way to contact them? A reputable work at home program offers more than just a program they should give support. You need to know as much as you can before you jump into a work from home program. This may become your business. You will need to know it inside out in order to be successful at it. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. A lot of times people assume hat because it is the internet you do not need to actually work. Some work from home opportunities suggest that you will make a six figure income for doing next to nothing. If you ever see a work from home program that say’s anything about you being a millionaire, in no time, without doing any work, turn away, it’s a scam. The bottom line is online and offline businesses are not that different. People have to be buying your product or service or else you don’t make money. You could never set up shop somewhere offline and expect to make six figures a week without putting in the hours, advertising and promoting your business, giving good customer service, seeking new customers and looking for ways to stay ahead of the competition. What makes you think this is possible with an online work from home program. You don’t want to reinvent the wheel when you are a complete novice. The internet is a fast paced instrument. Moving too far from what everyone else is doing can cost you profits. That’s why starting up with a work from home program that already has all the tools you need is ideal. However, you generally are looking to work from home so you can be your own boss, have flexible hours and spend more time with your family. If your work from home program has you making someone else a lot of money but you’re not seeing a dime or if you are spending less time with your family than you hoped for, you may want to rethink working with them. Working from home can feel like another day job if the program doesn’t offer you the support you need. There are a lot of free programs out there and many of them are credible and effective for generating an income from home. However, you need to dispel the myth that you can make it online without investing some money. It takes money to make it. This is not to say that you have to fork over a lot of cash in order to be successful but you do need to keep in mind that at some point you will have to spend some money if you truly want to work from home. Working from home is a great solution for many people. As long as you do your research before joining a program and keep in mind that you will have to work at it if you want to be successful, working from home really can be the best ways to generate an income. 2008: Getting Started in a Work at Home Business by Jeff Casmer
There has never been a better time than now to consider your work at home opportunities. With a possible recession on the horizon, job security is far from what it used to be. Meanwhile, more and more people are discovering that they can make the same income - and sometimes much more - by working at home. There are numerous options for someone wishing to work at home. You can do everything from offering freelance services, such as writing or web design, to participating in multi-level marketing programs, to running an Internet based business such as: If you're more interested in working for an employer, there are also a range of administrative, telecommuting and professional work at home opportunities too. So how do you begin if you want to work at home? Well, the first step is to think about what you'd like to do, and what will fit in with your other demands. For example, if you're a mom at home with kids, you'll probably need a work at home business or job that you can fit around your children's sleep times. Or if you still have a job and want to make a gradual transition to working at home, you'll likely need a business that you can run after hours and that doesn't impinge on your day job. When it comes to what you want to do - that's a matter of brainstorming and thinking about the kinds of work at home businesses or jobs that interest you... and are likely to maintain your interest over time. Despite the huge amount of hype about working at home, there IS work involved! Having said that, if you find something that you're inherently passionate about... it may not feel like work at all. Of course, while having an interest in your work at home business is almost mandatory, you should also choose something for which you have - or can learn - the necessary skills and knowledge. And don't rule out learning - many work at home businesses may seem foreign to you now, but that doesn't mean you can't quickly find the necessary resources to learn and master the know-how you need. Once you find the right work at home endeavor, it's a matter of putting everything you have into it to ensure your success. Running a work at home business, in particular, can be challenging, but the rewards are certainly worth it. Plus, although you may be based at home, that doesn't mean you're alone. All over the world there are other people just like you, running a work at home business or in a work at home job. Many of these people "meet" on popular work at home discussion boards to exchange ideas, give each other business, and talk about work and life in general. I strongly recommend you do the same. There are more work at home business and job opportunities available now than ever before, and I encourage you to explore those on offer. Chances are there is one that will deliver the fun, income and lifestyle you desire. I was on the phone today and heard from a 69 year old ex truck driver who is now pulling in thousands of dollars every week on the internet using the simple work at home business found at:Work at Home Business Today.
